Third Annual Wheaton Arts Parade & Festival to be held on Sunday, Sept. 22

For Immediate Release: Wednesday, September 18, 2019

The Third Annual Wheaton Arts Parade & Festival, a day of free events celebrating the artistic and cultural diversity of the community, will take place on Sunday, Sept. 22. The parade will start at 10 a.m. on Georgia Avenue in Downtown Wheaton. The festival will run from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. at Wheaton Veterans Urban Park on Fern Street.

The event continues to grow, and this year, more than 70 artists, marching bands, dance companies, arts floats and costumed performers will “March for Art.” The parade will travel north on Georgia Avenue from Prichard Street to Price Avenue and viewers are encouraged to watch from the east side of Georgia Avenue. This year’s parade will unveil several new large floats including “Mother Earth” from the Wheaton Area Moms, “A Tree of Books” from the Glenmont Forest Neighbors Civic Association and the Wheaton Triangle “Giant.”

The arts festival will feature three stages of local performers, musicians, storytellers, dancers and student performers. This year’s lineup will include performances from multiple Strathmore Artists-in-Residence, MoCo’s Got Talent student winners, drum lines and hip-hop dancers.

The artists and arts organizations displaying and selling their works will be in a tented exhibition area and community organizations and government departments will promote their art-related programs. Interactive artist demos will include silk screening, mosaics, gel prints, "yarn bomb" art, mask making and a "Brush Battle."

Among the family friendly activities will be free face painting and balloon art. The food court will include offerings from some of Wheaton's favorite local restaurants

Wheaton is one of three Maryland Arts and Entertainment Districts in Montgomery County. The Wheaton Arts Parade & Festival celebrates the arts and cultural diversity of the community and is supported by numerous local businesses and community organizations, the Montgomery County Government, the Arts and Humanities Council of Montgomery County, the County Department of Recreation, Montgomery Parks and the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission.
