Council Committee Meetings for Sept. 19

The following committee meetings are scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 19. Meeting: Joint Health and Human Services (HHS) Committee and Public Safety (PS) Committee
Time: 9:30 a.m.
Location: Seventh floor hearing room
HHS Committee: Councilmembers Gabe Albornoz (Chair), Evan Glass (Lead for Homelessness and Vulnerable Communities) and Craig Rice

Discussion on Behavioral/Mental Health Services in Juvenile Justice System
The HHS and PS Committees will meet jointly to receive a briefing on behavioral and mental health services in Montgomery County’s juvenile justice system. Last spring, the joint committee held a worksession on the Mental Health Court to discuss its ongoing implementation, successes and challenges. At that time, joint committee members asked about the types of supports available to youth in the juvenile justice system and if there is a structure in place to address underlying issues that may be the source of poor or delinquent behavior. The following individuals are expected to attend the joint committee meeting:

Meeting: Transportation and Environment (T&E) Committee
Time: 2 p.m..
Location: Seventh floor hearing room
T&E Committee: Councilmembers Tom Hucker (Chair), Evan Glass and Hans Riemer

Briefing on the Purple Line
The T&E Committee will receive a briefing on the progress of the Purple Line. The Council has asked that the T&E Committee receive briefings from the Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) and Purple Line Transit Partners (PLTP) on the status of implementing the Purple Line at least every six months. This meeting will be the fifth such briefing. Peter van der Waart, chief executive officer of PLTP, and Charles Lattuca, executive director of transit development and delivery, MTA, are expected to attend.

The Purple Line is a 16-mile light rail line that will extend from Bethesda to New Carrollton. It will provide a direct connection to the Metrorail Red, Green and Orange Lines at Bethesda, Silver Spring, College Park and New Carrollton. Twenty-one Purple Line stations are planned. The Purple Line also will connect to MARC, Amtrak and local bus services.
