More than a Month of Montgomery County Activities Celebrating October as ‘Energy Action Month’ Begins on Saturday, Sept. 28, with ‘Energy Roadshow’ Free Event in Rockville

October is Energy Action Month, but Montgomery County’s Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) will spend more than four weeks spreading its messages to help protect the environment and lower energy costs. The opening event of the celebration will be on Saturday, Sept. 28, with the first of five free “Energy Roadshow” events at the Lincoln Park Community Center in Rockville.

Energy Roadshows are events that will help answer all types of question on how to lower energy usage and save money. At every roadshow, there will be experts providing brief presentations on energy-saving programs of various scales, including efficient appliances, electric vehicles, home energy audits, solar installations and energy assistance opportunities. Information also will be available on energy-related scams that have had an increasing presence in the Washington area.

The first Roadshow, at the Lincoln Park Community Center, will take place from 10 a.m. until noon. The community center is located at 357 Frederick Ave. in Rockville.

  • Wednesday, Oct. 30. 5:30 -7:30 p.m. Rockville Memorial Library, 21 Maryland Ave. in Rockville.
  • Thursday, Nov. 7, 5:30 -7:30 p.m. Silver Spring Library, 900 Wayne Ave, Silver Spring.
  • Thursday, Nov. 14, 5:30 -7:30 p.m. Germantown Library, 19840 Century Blvd., Germantown.
  • Thursday, Nov. 21, 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. Olney Library, 3500 Olney Laytonsville Rd, Olney.

DEP is hosting and supporting dozens of Energy Action Month events throughout October, including the following:

  • Tuesday, Oct. 1. Energy Efficiency Day recognition. Although Energy Efficiency Day is officially the first Wednesday in October (Oct. 2 this year), Montgomery County will salute the special day by issuing a proclamation on Tuesday, Oct. 1, during a session of the Montgomery County Council. Energy Efficiency Day was first celebrated in 2016 and is a collaborative effort of dozens of energy efficiency advocacy groups around the U.S. The Energy Efficiency Day message is, “Save Money. Cut Carbon. Breathe Easier.”
  • Oct. 1- 4: Energy Week at the Montgomery Health and Human Services Home Energy Program. HHS office at 1301 Piccard Drive in Rockville. 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Qualified residents can learn about energy assistance programs and after completing an application or bring in documentation, they will receive an energy conservation box (while supplies last).   • Oct. 5-6: Solar Home Tour. 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Solar United Neighbors and American Solar Energy Society are teaming up for the 24th annual National Solar Tour in which homeowners and businesses who rely on solar power open their locations to share their experiences.   • Oct. 4, 5, 12, 19 and 25: LEDs and Libations. Residents can visit locations of the Montgomery County Alcoholic Beverage Service (ABS) and certain retailers to swap out inefficient incandescent and CFL bulbs for efficient LEDs (up to three per person).   • Saturday, Oct. 5. 4-7 p.m. Partnering with MISCellaneous Distillery at Hampton Lane Liquor and Wine, 4920 Hampton Lane, Bethesda.
  • Saturday, Oct. 12. 4-7 p.m. Partnering with MISCellaneous Distillery at Westwood Liquor and Wine, 5432 Westbard Ave, Bethesda.
  • Saturday, Oct. 19. 1-4 p.m. Partnering with MISCellaneous Distillery at Clarksburg Liquor Store, 12051 Chestnut Branch Way, Clarksburg.
  • Friday, Oct. 25. 4-7 p.m. Partnering with MISCellaneous Distillery at Seneca Meadows, 20680 Seneca Meadows Parkway, Germantown.
  • Wednesday, Oct. 23. 8-11 a.m. Silver Spring Civic Building in Silver Spring. Benchmarking Workshop. Join Montgomery County DEP and the Montgomery County Green Bank for a hands-on event for building owners and property managers.
