Candid Conversations on Race

For Immediate Release: Friday, October 25, 2019

The Montgomery County Executive’s Faith Community Advisory Council (FCAC) will launch "Candid Conversations on Race” on Monday, Oct. 28 at the Silver Spring Civic Building, One Veterans Place, Silver Spring, beginning with refreshments at 6:30 p.m., and the program at 7 p.m.

The event is open to the public and anyone wanting to understand the history and ongoing consequences of a racialized society.  As part of the agenda, a safe space is provided for people to share their experiences of racism and the inequities it creates in our society.

The program is based on facilitated book or film discussion groups meeting this fall and winter. The launch will introduce the books:

  • Waking Up White, and Finding Myself in the Story of Race by Debby Irving;
  • So You Want to Talk About Race by Ijeoma Olua; and
  • White Fragility: Why It’s Hard for White People to Talk About Racism by Robin Diangelo, foreword by Michael Eric Dyson.

The film is Race: The Power of an Illusion.

Participants will have a choice of which book or film they wish to focus on within a small group meeting in various sites throughout Montgomery County from Nov. 2019 through March 2020.  Each group will be guided by experienced facilitators.  After completion, discussions are likely to be considered, “what changes can I make in my personal life or citizenship to further understand and eliminate racism in my community?”
