For Immediate Release: Tuesday, November 5, 2019
The 11th Annual Tribute to America’s Veterans Concert will be held at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 6, in the Buffalo Soldiers Great Hall of the Silver Spring Civic Building in Downtown Silver Spring. Vietnam veteran Wayne Miller will be the keynote speaker. Chou Chou and the Imperial Palms Orchestra will be the featured performers.
“Saluting Our Vets As Time Goes By: A Celebration of Valor” will include a special tribute to service members who were killed in action in the Global War on Terror and to all who have served in the military. Display cases will include photos of some of the 22 Montgomery County residents who were killed in action in Iraq or Afghanistan. There also will be photos of veterans from the County and of others who have served and are currently living in the County.
The free concert is open to all, whether they are veterans or not. The concert is presented by Silver Spring Town Center, Inc., in collaboration with the Montgomery County Commission on Veterans Affairs. Mr. Miller, who earned a Purple Heart in Vietnam, is vice chair of the Commission on Veterans Affairs.
Keynote speaker Miller is the director of the Silver Spring Veterans Center, which serves more than 300 veterans each week. He was 19 when he suffered severe injuries and lost a leg in Vietnam on July 4, 1969. The former Marine earned his undergraduate degree from Frostburg State University and went on to earn masters degrees from George Washington University and Catholic University.
“Although we officially recognize Nov. 11 as ‘Veterans Day,’ the Montgomery County Commission on Veterans Affairs works every day to make sure those who served our country get the services they need and the recognition they deserve,” said Dan Bullis, a Vietnam veteran who is chair of the commission. “We are so glad to have Wayne as our keynote speaker for this event. He went through so much serving our country and he has dedicated his life to making sure the needs of other veterans are well addressed.”
Chou Chou and the Imperial Palms Orchestra will provide a wide variety of big band, swing, jazz and pop favorites. Since the retirement of Doc Scantlin earlier this year, Chou Chou Scantlin has taken over as the orchestra’s leader, as well as having her role as lead performer of the nationally known group.
