New ‘Free Little Library’ in Neighborhood Park to be Dedicated in Glenmont on Saturday, Nov. 16

The Glenmont Forest Neighbors Civic Association (GFNCA) and the Greater Silver Spring Civitan at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 16, will dedicate a new “Free Little Library” in the outdoor space at the Judson Road median and Lindell Street in Glenmont. The project is one of several new free little libraries being established as part of GFNCA’s ongoing efforts to help improve its neighborhood quality of life.
The dedication ceremony will take place in the park space that also serves as the site of the community’s annual block party. The lend a book/take a book library is supported by the Greater Silver Spring Civitan, which will help maintain a wide variety of books—in multiple languages—for neighbors to share. The library will have a natural seating and reading area utilizing repurposed tree stumps provided by the County’s Department of Environmental Protection and relocated local boulders.
Free Little Library is a worldwide nonprofit that started in Wisconsin in 2009. This year, there will be more than 90,000 free little libraries operating in more than 90 nations. The concept is based on residents leaving books, which are then available to anyone who wants to read them.
The GFNCA is installing eight free little libraries throughout the neighborhood. The library to be dedicated on Saturday will be the first of two in public spaces. The “little libraries” consist of weather-proof cabinets of varying size, mounted on posts with lighting. Neighbors have committed to maintain each library.
A volunteer has designed and built the cabinets for the GFNCA initiative. Grants from the County’s Neighborhood Events Matching Funds and from the Greater Silver Spring Civitan help support the program.
The dedication event Saturday, which is open to the public, will include coffee and doughnuts provided by Montgomery Housing Partnership.
