Thousands of Residents of All Ages Expected to Participate in Montgomery County’s MLK Day of Service Activities

For Immediate Release: Friday, January 17, 2020

The Montgomery County Volunteer Center and its partner agencies will host large-scale service project activities in celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, designated as a national day of service. Note: All locations require advance registration. As of Jan. 17, the main site in North Bethesda has some spaces remaining, but satellite locations are full.

NORTH BETHESDA (MAIN SITE): Monday, Jan. 20, 1 - 3 p.m.
Bethesda North Marriott Hotel and Conference Center, 5701 Marinelli Road 

  • Service Projects: Participants will be able to choose from dozens of projects benefiting organizations that serve a variety of community needs, from hunger to animal adoption.
  • Volunteer Fair: Representatives from 30 nonprofits and government agencies will have representatives on-hand to discuss their organizations’ missions and year-round volunteer opportunities.
  • Luminaries: Two, local civil rights activists who worked with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will be participating in the event:
  • Willie King, Dr. King’s secretary at the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, who transcribed the civil rights leader’s notes, scrawled on scraps of paper, into his famous Letter from a Birmingham Jail
  • Joan Trumpauer Mullholland, a Freedom Rider arrested and held on death row for her work to desegregate an all-white lunch counter in Mississippi; she was the first white person to attend the then-all-black Tougaloo College and join the then-all-black Delta Sigma Theta sorority
