Fund for Montgomery Invites Elected Officials as Donors to Distinguished Leaders Fund

For Immediate Release: Wednesday, February 19, 2020

The Fund for Montgomery Advisory Board recently established the Distinguished Leaders Fund to include those elected officials, both current and past, who represent Montgomery County, including the federal, state, county, and municipal-level officeholders.

Since its founding in 2011 by former County Executive Ike Leggett, the Fund for Montgomery has become recognized as an effective provider of support to Montgomery County with a measurable impact within the community.

“I am proud to continue the tradition begun by former County Executive Ike Leggett, in working with the Office of Community Partnerships to supplement County funding for these community-building events,” said County Executive Marc Elrich.  “Thanks to private financial support from businesses, foundations, and individuals, the Montgomery County community has been able to continue to gather and celebrate our diverse community and dedication to service and volunteerism, while reducing reliance on taxpayer dollars, through the Fund for Montgomery.”

The Distinguished Leaders Fund is in its formative stages, but already has support from U.S. Representatives Jamie Raskin and David Trone; Maryland State Treasurer Nancy Kopp; Maryland Delegates Marc Korman and Pamela Queen; Montgomery County Council President Sidney Katz and Councilmembers Tom Hucker, Nancy Navarro, and Craig Rice; Town of Kensington Mayor Tracey Furman, and members of the Town of Kensington Council; Rockville Councilmember David Myles; Somerset Mayor Jeffrey Z. Slavin; former Montgomery County Councilmember Bruce Adams; and former Rockville Mayor Susan R. Hoffmann.

The Fund for Montgomery, a not-for-profit fund of the Greater Washington Community Foundation, reaches out to the private sector for support for major Montgomery County events, including:

  • Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration at the Music Center at Strathmore
  • Montgomery Serves Awards at Imagination Stage
  • Silver Spring Jazz Festival
  • FutureFest (formerly World of Montgomery/KIDfest)
  • Community Service Week
  • Montgomery County Thanksgiving Parade

The members of the Fund for Montgomery Advisory Board are Bruce Adams; Tufail Ahmad; Mayra Bayonet; Shelley Block; Josh Bokee; Barbara Goldberg Goldman; Development Manager Susan Hoffmann; State Sen. Cheryl Kagan; Omar Lazo; David Rodich; Devang Shah; Chair Sally Sternbach, Diane Vu; and Greg Wims.
