Statement from Council President Katz on the passing of Montgomery County employee Michael Miller from Covid-19

For Immediate Release: Thursday, April 16, 2020

ROCKVILLE, Md., April 16, 2020—Council President Sidney Katz made the following statement upon learning that Montgomery County employee Michael Miller, who helped manage the Ride On fleet for the Department of Transportation, passed away from complications of Covid-19.

Today is a heartbreaking one in our community as we have learned that Michael Miller is the first Montgomery County government employee to lose his life to Covid-19. The Council expresses its deepest condolences to Mr. Miller’s family including his wife Donna and their children. We are also thinking about Mr. Miller’s coworkers at the Department of Transportation and especially his colleagues at the Silver Spring/Bethesda Depot where he worked on behalf of all County residents.

Like other communities across the nation, the death toll in Montgomery County is steadily increasing. Our health experts have advised us that the number of deaths in our community will continue to rise. We understand this on a factual level; however, it is the emotional toll that is exceedingly difficult for all of us as a community to grapple with and process. Every death is an immeasurable loss to our county. Each number you see reported represents a parent, grandparent, sibling, friend or loved one. Each person contributed to our community in his or her own way.

As local leaders we are accustomed to conquering challenges to help make the quality of life better for our residents. While this unprecedented health crisis is out of our immediate control, how we all respond to it is within our power. It is the collective action of health experts, local and state leaders, community partners and our residents that will get us through this crisis. We pledge to provide all of the resources possible to support our residents and our community throughout these difficult times. We are in this fight together, and we will get through it together as One Montgomery.
