For Immediate Release: Tuesday, April 28, 2020

ROCKVILLE, Md., April 28, 2020—Today the Montgomery County Council introduced a special appropriation of $5 million recommended by the County Executive to the County’s Human Services Response and Community Assistance account to be used by the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) to expand a program to provide direct financial assistance to County residents. This week, the program began to distribute funds to low-income households identified through current DHHS programs which should be received early next week. The County is working with non-profit partners on the future distribution of funds.

The Council and County Executive continue to collaborate to provide the necessary funding and programs for community members and local businesses in response to the Covid-19 pandemic. The additional $5 million special appropriation is needed to provide financial support for community members who continue facing economic hardships. This County assistance is intended to fill the financial assistance gaps not covered by Covid-19 related state and federal assistance.

The County will seek federal and state reimbursement for costs associated with the response to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Council is scheduled to hold a public hearing and vote on this special appropriation on Thursday, April 30 at 1:30 p.m.
