25th Annual Taste of Wheaton Festival Will Have Virtual Feel with Weeklong Celebration June 7-13 Featuring Food from a Wide Array of Local Restaurants, Giveaways, ‘The Nighthawks’ Online

For Immediate Release: Friday, June 5, 2020

The 25th annual Taste of Wheaton festival will have a virtual feel in some respects due to the COVID-19 health emergency, but the June 7-13 event will still highlight some of the area’s top local restaurants, providing giveaways and an opportunity to explore the Wheaton Downtown area. Another special aspect of this year’s festival: The Nighthawks, one of the area’s most popular local bands, will perform newly recorded songs online for the event.

“The Taste of Wheaton is a signature event celebrating the Wheaton community,” said Luisa Montero-Diaz, director of the Mid-County Regional Service Office. “This year, although the event is virtual in many regards, our objective remains the same: supporting our local businesses. We are encouraging the community to come out during the week of June7-13, practice social distancing, of course, and patronize our restaurants. Wheaton is known for its great ethnic food and this event is a reminder that these restaurants are open and need your support to remain open.”.

With a need to maintain safety guidelines due to COVID-19, this year’s event, which is being organized by the Wheaton Urban District, will enable festival goers a chance to eat their way around Wheaton while staying at an appropriate distance from others.

Participating restaurants will include Green Plate Catering, Kantutas Restaurant, The Limerick Pub, Los Chorros, Los Cobanos Restaurant, Maria's Cafe and Restaurant Inc,, Hollywood East Cafe and Methi Indian Restaurant, among others.

Some of the restaurants will offer sample “taste’ menus along with their regular menu and several will have outdoor eating areas. Many will be offering the best of their menus for takeout, delivery and curbside pickup. The list of participating restaurants and dining options can be found at Wheatonmd.org.

The fun actually kicks off one day before the official start of the festival. From noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 6, free Wheaton branded giveaway items (including face masks, insulated lunch bags, cutlery sets and hand sanitizers) will be given away—while supplies last—at the Wheaton Urban District office at 11435 Grandview Ave.

Activities during the festival will include:

  • Playing interactive “pizza bingo”. By completing seven festival activities listed as part of pizza bingo, participants will become eligible for a drawing to win a $50 gift card.
  • The Nighthawks, who have been entertaining since 1972, will showcase a new online song each day of Taste of Wheaton Week. The group is still headed by founding member Mark Wenner. The songs can be found each day of the festival at Wheatonmd.org.
  • To celebrate the Taste of Wheaton, artists of the Wheaton Arts Parade will be hanging “Yarn Bombs” on lamp posts outside the doors of several participating restaurants.
