For Immediate Release: Monday, August 10, 2020

The Montgomery County Commission for Women (CFW) will premier “The Women and Our Vote: 100th Anniversary of the Women’s Suffrage Movement” – a virtual event commemorating the 100 year struggle for women’s right to vote in the U.S on Wednesday, Aug, 19. The program, available for streaming at 7 p.m. via the CFW’s YouTube channel and Facebook page, will recount selected stories of the suffrage movement through musical performances, narratives, and special presentations. This is the first virtual event hosted by the Commission.

The production showcases distinguished guest speakers including, University of Maryland History Professor Dr. Robyn Muncy, a guest curator of the National Archives exhibit “Rightfully Hers: American Women and the Vote,” and Montgomery College President Dr. DeRionne Pollard, named one of Washington, D.C.’s most powerful women by Washingtonian Magazine. Both will engage in a pre-recorded conversation that explores the top three takeaways of the suffrage movement.

Several CFW Suffrage 2020 Commemoration partners include the Montgomery County League of Women Voters, the Gender and Women’s Studies Program at Montgomery College, and The Civic Circle. Featured guests also include Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich, the Montgomery County Council, and President of the Montgomery County Board of Education Shebra Evans. This virtual event is sponsored by CFW’s Diamond Sponsors, Bernstein Management Corp/EYA/Bethesda Farm Women’s Market and the Carl M. Freeman Foundation.

The virtual CFW Suffrage 2020 Commemoration event is free and open to all ages. Adults and youth alike are encouraged to tune-in and learn more about the 19th Amendment ratification of the U.S. Constitution, importance of voting, and vital contributions women make at all levels of American democracy.
