MCDOT Works With COVID Corps Youths

For Immediate Release: Wednesday, August 26, 2020

COVID Corps” is a summer employment program for residents ages 16 to 23 that hires young people to support the County’s COVID-19 response. MCDOT is working with several of COVID Corps staff to serve as Transit Ambassadors.

"I am extremely grateful for the job opportunity COVID Corps has given me during this hard time, as not only has it allowed me to keep moving forward, it has also allowed me to give back to my community in many ways,” said Montgomery Blair High School Junior Jennifer Callejas.

Montgomery County Department of Transportation's (MCDOT) COVID Corps is helping monitor the department’s e-scooter pilot program in the Silver Spring business district to ensure that the vehicles are properly parked, answer questions and report to MCDOT on observed use of the e-scooters.

"Having a job with the COVID Corps has been a huge relief,” said Howard University Senior Pearl Damanka. I was worried about where I would find a job this summer, and the county gave me just what I needed. It has been such a joy to work with such dedicated and compassionate people for the last few weeks."

MCDOT’s COVID Corps staff are also providing Ride On and other transportation program information to commuters at the Silver Spring Transit Center during weekday peak times.

"I'm grateful for the COVID Corps program because it provided me a job in times of crisis and a way to practice professionalism in the work environment while helping my community," said Washington College Junior Valery Tabraj-Huaccachi.

The County’s COVID Corps was recently featured on the PBS Newshour and Local DVM.  Learn more about COVID Corps.
