Update on MD 355 Crossing Project: Lane Closures Planned for September 29-30

For Immediate Release: Tuesday, September 29, 2020

From 9 p.m., Tuesday, September 29 to 5 a.m., Wednesday, September 30, there will be north bound and south bound lane closures between Wilson Drive to Woodmont Avenue Corner for the installation of lane reflectors.

Construction activity inside the Medical Center Metro Station continues through Spring 2021. All construction activities within the station occur behind or within partitioned areas on the platform and mezzanine levels and are performed during non-service hours.  Work is not expected to impede access to or inside the Station. Work within the Station includes construction of two new Metro entrance elevators on the Navy Side of Rockville Pike, along with a connecting passageway from the mezzanine level to the new elevators to serve passengers traveling to and from the Walter Reed/Naval Support Activity Bethesda. The project is expected to be complete in fall 2020.

ABOUT THE CROSSING PROJECT:

The Crossing Project is located at the Medical Center Metro Station, near the Medical Center Metro Station, National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center at Naval Support Activity Bethesda and will provide a safer and more efficient environment for people and vehicles traveling through this heavily trafficked area.

The Crossing Project has two main components: 1) A shallow pedestrian underpass connecting Naval Support Activity Bethesda/Walter Reed National Military Medical Center on the east side of Rockville Pike to NIH and the bus/commuter transit center on the west side; and 2) Deep elevators on the Navy side of Rockville Pike to the Metrorail mezzanine.

In addition, the Crossing Project includes pedestrian safety, traffic and transit improvements to the nearby intersections of MD 355 (Rockville Pike) at Jones Bridge Road and Center Drive (NIH), and at MD 355 @ Woodmont Avenue.
