For Immediate Release: Wednesday, October 14, 2020
On Thursday, October 15 at 6:30 p.m., the Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) will hold a virtual meeting to inform the public about design concepts for a FLASH bus rapid transit (BRT) line along Veirs Mill Road and provide an opportunity to ask questions and provide feedback. Registration is required: RSVP NOW.
MCDOT is planning to design and construct a seven-mile, FLASH BRT line between Montgomery College and the Wheaton Metrorail Station. The Veirs Mill Road corridor has some of the highest existing transit volumes in Montgomery County and has long been considered for transit enhancements.
The Veirs Mill Road BRT is expected to have 12 stations, improve transit travel time and increase opportunity for a broad range of users, including a significant number of minority and low-income riders living along the highly congested corridor. The project should improve passenger transit mobility by connecting riders to high density housing and employment centers.
Planning conducted by the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) resulted in a Recommended Alternative in late 2017. The Recommended Alternative includes queue jumps (a traffic control device that gives special preference to certain vehicles at certain intersections) for use by BRT and other buses at congested intersections along the corridor; 12, new BRT stations with level boarding and off-board payment; Transit Signal Priority (gives special treatment to transit vehicles at signalized intersections); purchase of new, 60-foot, articulated vehicles; and associated pedestrian and bicycle improvements along the corridor. The study retains curbside dedicated lanes as the long-term BRT alternative for Veirs Mill Road.
