Press Releases

For Immediate Release: Monday, October 26, 2020

Alcohol Beverage Services (ABS), in partnership with the Montgomery County Government Employees Organization (MCGEO—UFCW Local 1994) and County Executive Marc Elrich, are supporting the Labor Against Cancer initiative, benefiting the local chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS). The “Labor Against Cancer” retail store campaign will run in all 26 County ABS store locations started today, Monday, Oct. 26, and will continue through Nov. 14.

During the campaign, customers will be asked at checkout if they wish to donate $1, $3 or $5 to support LLS and the Labor Against Cancer initiative. County Executive Elrich has issued Executive Order 126-20 to authorize the campaign.

Blood cancer is the second-leading cancer killer of children and young adults under age 19. All funds raised in the campaign will go toward LLS research and patient support services.

ABS and UFCW 1994 have set a goal to raise $35,000 during the campaign. In addition, corporate partner Tito’s Handmade Vodka has pledged a $10,000 donation to LLS.

ABS employees and UFCW 1994 also took part in the annual “Light the Night Walk,” which was held virtually this year due to the COVID-19 health crisis.

“We are excited about this partnership and supporting LLS is a great way for us all to give back to our local community,” said Kent Massie, ABS chief of retail operations.

ABS is the alcohol wholesaler of beer, wine and spirits for Montgomery County. ABS also operates 25 beer, wine and spirits stores and one spirits-only store. It manages alcohol licensing, enforcement and education for more than 1,000 businesses. Generating more than $35 million in net income annually, ABS profits are used to pay down County debt with a large portion deposited in the County general fund to pay for resident services that would otherwise be funded by County tax dollars.

Learn more about ABS activities on its website and also by following ABS on Facebook and Twitter.
