Statement of the Montgomery County Council on Superintendent Jack R. Smith's retirement

For Immediate Release: Friday, January 15, 2021

ROCKVILLE, Md., Jan. 15, 2021—Yesterday Superintendent Jack R. Smith announced his retirement from Montgomery County Public Schools. He has tentatively set his retirement date for June 1. The Montgomery County Council made the following statement about the announcement:

“Since 2016, Superintendent Jack Smith has led our world-class Montgomery County Public Schools with great skill and care. As a former teacher and principal, he understands every facet of education and that experience helped to guide his leadership. We have all benefited from the quality of his work and the concern he has for others.

“Throughout the years Superintendent Smith collaborated with the Council on many important issues including childhood nutrition, expanding early childhood education, educational equity and accountability and college and career readiness, just to name a few. Most recently, Superintendent Smith and the Montgomery County Board of Education rose to the numerous, formidable challenges caused by the pandemic by swiftly pivoting to remote learning, establishing grab and go food distribution sites and taking all actions necessary to protect the health and wellbeing of our greatest asset—our students.

“The Council will continue its ongoing communication with the Board of Education as plans are made for the transition of leadership. We wish Superintendent Smith all the best as he prepares for his retirement and send our best wishes to his family.”
