ROCKVILLE, Maryland, April 30, 2021— Mayra Cruz-Solís, civic engagement specialist and Hispanic outreach liaison with the Montgomery County Council; Adriana Toro, director of Linkages to Learning (a program of the Rockville-based nonprofit EveryMind); Nancy Lazo, senior coordinator of Linkages to Learning at Georgian Forest Elementary School; and Marcela Cespedes, mother of a student of Georgian Forest Elementary School, will be the featured guests on this week’s “El Momento Cívico / The Civic Moment,” airing today at 2 p.m. on Radio America (WILC 900AM).

The show will be divided in three segments. In the first segment, Ms. Cruz-Solís and radio show host Lilian Mass will provide residents with information about the Working Families Income Supplement Bill (14-21), introduced last week by Council Vice President Gabe Albornoz and Councilmembers Nancy Navarro and Sidney Katz. They will also discuss the County's public health guidelines for a further phased reopening.

In the second segment of the show, Ms. Cruz-Solís will discuss the importance of civic and leadership training and provide information on how to get involved.

To wrap up the show, the discussion will focus on organizations in the County that have helped create a positive impact in the Latino community both before and during the pandemic. Ms. Toro will explain the mission and vision of Linkages to Learning  (a program of the Rockville-based nonprofit EveryMind) and provide details of the program’s operations, particularly in Title I schools. Ms. Lazo will discuss the program’s work at the Georgian Forest Elementary School and highlight the positive support it has for Latino families in the County. Ms. Cespedes will share her family’s personal experiences participating in Proyecto Cívico and as an engaged mother of a child that attends Georgian Forest Elementary that is also familiar with the Linkages to Learning program.

“El Momento Cívico / The Civic Moment” is one component of the Latino Civic Project, which was spearheaded by Councilmember Nancy Navarro. Topics include civic engagement, the functions of County government and various agencies and public policy issues. Councilmember Navarro started the Latino Civic Project in 2012 to promote and strengthen civic participation among Latinos and immigrants. The Montgomery County Council and Radio America have entered a partnership that provides the Latino community with key information on issues and programs. The partnership also provides a forum for residents to express views and ask questions. The partnership includes the weekly one-hour show each Friday on the Washington metropolitan area’s most popular Spanish language station. Lilian Mass is the show’s host.

Each week, the show features guests talking about important issues before the Council and provides information about programs offered by the County to help residents.
