Councilmember Jawando to Join the Greater Washington Community Foundation for an Event Sept. 9 at Noon on the Food for Montgomery Initiative

Rockville, MD, Sept. 9, 2021—Today at noon, Councilmember Will Jawando will join the Greater Washington Community Foundation for a three-part tour of partner organizations from the Food for Montgomery Initiative.

The tour will visit three different locations throughout the day, from noon to 6 p.m. Each stop will highlight a different aspect of the Food Security plan developed at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic through the Food for Montgomery Initiative. Councilmember Jawando will participate in a brief panel discussion at each location. Details are listed below:

Location 1: Red Wiggler Community Farm - 23400 Ridge Road, Germantown, MD
Time: 12:00 p.m. - 1:00 p.m.
Panelists from Manna Food Center, Red Wiggler Community Farm and Guru Gobind Singh Foundation.

Location 2: Upcounty Regional Services Center - 12900 Middlebrook Road, Germantown, MD
Time: 1:30 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.
Panelists from the Upcounty Consolidation Hub at BlackRock, La Villa Restaurant and Maryland Hunger Solutions. Time permitting, guests will be invited to help volunteer by packing boxes for the Hub.

Location 3: Galway Elementary School - 12612 Galway Drive, Silver Spring, MD
Time: 4:30 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Panelists from Kingdom Fellowship A.M.E. Church, Rainbow Community Development Corporation and the Montgomery County Food Council.

In June 2020, the Council approved a $10,500,000 special appropriation initiated by Councilmember Jawando for the Food for Montgomery Fund. Administered through the Greater Washington Community Foundation, the Fund addresses the food security challenges residents in Montgomery County have faced throughout the pandemic due to a loss of income or other financial hardships. During this time, the public-private partnership between the County and the Greater Washington Community Foundation has included fund support towards local food banks, restaurants and farmers to help further reduce food insecurity.
