ROCKVILLE, Md., Sept. 17, 2021—The Montgomery County Council will hold its eighth annual Hispanic Heritage Month commemoration hosted by Councilmember Nancy Navarro, Council President Tom Hucker and Council Vice President Gabe Albornoz on Tuesday, Sept. 21 at 9:15 a.m. The theme of this year’s commemoration, which includes a video segment, will highlight the impact of “The Latino Civic Project.”

The Council will be honoring the work and members of the Latino Civic Project, which Councilmember Navarro started in 2012 to promote and strengthen civic participation among Latinos and immigrants.

“The Latino community in Montgomery County is strong and resilient, and continues to play an outsized role in our economic and social fabric despite the ravages of the pandemic. I am proud of the Latino Civic Project’s impact in enhancing the civic knowledge base, engagement and participation of this vibrant community,” said Councilmember Navarro. “I launched this project in 2012 after hearing from many Latino residents about their desire to become engaged in shaping the various policy areas that make our County a wonderful place to live, work and play. It has been gratifying to see so many participants grow their leadership skills, empower others to get involved and make a positive difference in their neighborhoods.”

"Hispanic Heritage Month gives us the opportunity to celebrate and uplift our Hispanic and Latino community and recognize the invaluable contributions of the Latino community in Montgomery County," said Council President Hucker. "During a year when civic engagement has never been more important, it's fitting that we're honoring the Latino Civic Project, an initiative spearheaded by Councilmember Navarro aimed at strengthening civic participation among Montgomery County's Latino residents."

“This year’s Hispanic Heritage Month celebration raises Latino voices which strengthen every cornerstone of our community,” said Council Vice President Albornoz. “The Latino Civic Project connects Latino residents to public service and promotes active involvement in our democratic process. Through an inclusive civic engagement process, we will continue to make transformational change.”

The commemoration will be held on the online communications platform Zoom at the beginning of Tuesday’s Council meeting. It will be streaming live on the Council’s Facebook page, YouTube channel and at the Council website. Residents also will be able to watch live on television on Comcast/RCN channels 996/1056 Verizon channel 30.
