ROCKVILLE, Md., Sept. 21, 2021—The Montgomery County Council issued the following statement in response to the mistreatment of Haitian migrants at the U.S. border.
“We were collectively appalled by the footage and reports of very grave mistreatment of Haitian migrants at the U.S. border.
“The protection of fundamental human rights is at the core of our values in Montgomery County, and the shocking footage of U.S. Border Patrol agents on horseback chasing and whipping Haitian migrants that reportedly were trying to cross the US-Mexico border were, without a doubt, human rights abuses.
“These terrible events at our border are unacceptable and have exacerbated an already arduous crisis for immigrants seeking refuge from political and economic turmoil.
“These migrants have fled their homes after enduring devastating natural disasters and political upheaval and should be allowed safe refuge and due process and not be subjected to further trauma.
“We stand with all of our County's Haitian community during this difficult time.
“We are unified in condemning the appalling treatment of all migrants in our country, and we strongly encourage the Biden administration to address and rectify the inhumane treatment of Haitians at the U.S. border.”
