Montgomery County Council President Statement on Behalf of the Council on the Passing of Delegate Sheila Hixson

For Immediate Release: Monday, November 7, 2022

Montgomery County Council President Gabe Albornoz made the following statement on behalf of the Montgomery County Council on the passing of Delegate Sheila Hixson:

“The Council mourns the loss of longtime Montgomery County District 20 Delegate Sheila Hixson, who passed away Sunday evening.

We have lost a hometown hero who served District 20 residents tirelessly for over four decades in Annapolis, as the longest serving woman in the Maryland General Assembly.

Del. Hixson’s years of service include advocacy relating to civil rights, education, the environment, and raising awareness of and combatting child abuse, domestic violence and sexual harassment, among other social issues.

As former Chair of the powerful House of Delegates Ways and Means Committee, she worked to push forward progressive taxation measures and led legislation that benefited Maryland residents and businesses.

Del. Hixson paved the way for other women to run for elected office, both locally and statewide, and mentored many up-and-coming progressive leaders across the state. Her passion and dedication to public service will be remembered and her legacy lives on through principled policymaking that will impact Marylanders for generations to come.

We reflect on Del. Hixson’ years of honorable service and send our deepest condolences to her family and loved ones. May she rest in peace and power.
