Crash of Small Plane in Gaithersburg Today Leads to Area Power Being Off and About 125 Traffic Signals Impacted as of 11:15 p.m.

For Immediate Release: Sunday, November 27, 2022

Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) is reporting that approximately 125 traffic signal lights are without power as of 11:15 p.m. tonight, Sunday, Nov. 27. The outage is the result of a crash involving a small plane into electrical transmission lines near Goshen Road and Rothbury Road in Gaithersburg at about 6 p.m. today. Additional signals are expected to stop functioning as their battery backup units are depleted.

Maryland law requires motorists to treat non-functioning traffic signals as an all-way stop.  Drivers should only proceed into the intersection when it is clear and safe.

Emergency responders are not sure when power will be fully restored.
