Press Releases - Department of Transportation

For Immediate Release: Thursday, March 2, 2023

The Great Seneca Transit Network is a planned MCDOT/Ride On extRa bus service which will provide additional public transportation options to the communities in and around the Shady Grove Medical Center, Rio, and adjacent properties.

  • The service will provide frequent and reliable connections between Shady Grove Station, Shady Grove Medical Center, Universities of Shady Grove, and surrounding areas.
  • Service will include matching bus timing to support student and medical shift schedules

There are multiple phases. Phase 1 A is approved and includes:

  • Two routes: Lime and Pink
  • Enhanced bus shelters
  • Dedicated bus and bike lanes
  • Signal priority for buses at key intersections
  • Pedestrian access

Sustainability is important to MCDOT. Along with reducing the number of single-passenger cars on the road by expanding the Great Seneca Ride On extRa service, MCDOT is transitioning to a zero-emission fleet with new buses and upgraded facilities.

MCDOT will host pop-up events to share information with residents.

Pop-Up Event Dates:

  • Wednesday, March 1
    3 p.m. – 6 p.m.
Shady Grove Station & Bay C - East, Redland Road, Rockville

  • Saturday, March 11
    9:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.
Rio Lakefront boardwalk (near the Yard House and True Food Kitchen restaurants) - 9811 Washingtonian Boulevard, Gaithersburg
During the St. Patrick’s Day parade.

Pop-Up Goals:

  • To inform the community (transit riders and potential transit riders) of the Great Seneca Transit Network plan.
  • To inform the community about an upcoming virtual public meeting.

On Wednesday, March 15, from 6 to 7:30 p.m., MCDOT and the project team will host a virtual public meeting to engage community stakeholders, share information, answer questions, and receive feedback. Online registration is required. Details on this meeting and additional project information will be available on the project website here.
