The Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) will hold a virtual public meeting at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 13, to gather feedback from the disability community for the purpose of improving the accessibility of streets, sidewalks, crossings, and other public spaces in Montgomery County. The meeting will share feedback from a recent accessibility challenges survey, answer questions and gather further community input about their critical needs for accessing public transportation.

People with disabilities and caregivers of people with disabilities are encouraged to join the meeting, which will be accessible via Zoom. To access the meeting, go to bit.ly/3nwhWH6.

The meeting is part of an ongoing effort by MCDOT to design transportation facilities that go beyond ADA requirements to produce best-in-class accessibility features.

“We are developing a standard that will embed accessibility into the design of our transportation infrastructure from the very beginning,” said MCDOT Director Chris Conklin. “The updated County Accessibility Standards, drawn from the feedback of community members and advocates, will set a national standard in inclusive design.”

The plan builds on the work done in 2021 under a previous MCDOT accessibility study for the vision impaired. That plan can be viewed at TLC Vision. The project led to the development of a toolkit and pilot design to help County engineers and planners better design roads and sidewalks to help those with a vision disability get around.
