Montgomery County Department of Transportation Wins ‘Excellence in Paving Award’ from Maryland Asphalt Association

The Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) Highway Services Division employee Nicholas Boone has received the Maryland Asphalt Association “Excellence in Paving Award” at the 60th Annual Paving Conference. The award, which was presented on March 13, recognized Mr. Boone as the project manager for Montgomery County’s Rock Creek Terrace Subdivision project. MCDOT manages the County’s paving program, maintaining 5,200 miles of roadway.  

Mr. Boone has worked as a MCDOT Highway Services project manager and inspector for 18 years, supervising about 10 projects annually. He was recognized for ensuring staff followed best practices for asphalt construction on roadways. Boone’s project, the Rock Creek Terrace Subdivision, was recognized for its example of paving staff practicing high standards of safety and workmanship.  

“I want to congratulate Nicholas Boone and the MCDOT Highway Services team for doing a great job,” said County Executive Marc Elrich. “I’ve added funding into my proposed 2025 capital budget to expand the County’s paving operations. We know there is a lot of work to do to ensure the upkeep of our County roadways. Mr. Boone is great example of our very capable team of trained workers.” 

The program regularly assesses all County roadways with an in-depth road scanning truck that generates a pavement condition index every two years.  

“I am really proud of our workforce,” said MCDOT Director Chris Conklin. “Nicholas Boone is a stellar example of our Highway Services workers who do so much for the residents of this County. They are typically the first on the scene when there is a flood or snowstorm, and they work every day to keep our infrastructure safe for everyone who travels on our roadways. This recognition is well deserved and good to see.” 

Montgomery County’s paving, resurfacing and patching projects are scheduled during the spring, summer and fall. The spring construction season is active and residents can view upcoming projects online.
