Montgomery County will host the annual celebration of “Bike & Roll to School Day” from 8:15-9:15 a.m. on Wednesday, May 8, at Bayard Rustin Elementary School in Rockville. Montgomery County Department of Transportation Director Chris Conklin and representatives of the County’s Vision Zero Initiative are expected to attend the event.

Among the activities at Bike & Roll to School Day will be the distribution of safety materials. The special guests will greet students and parents and encourage biking to school.

The first-ever National Bike to School Day took place on May 9, 2012, in coordination with the League of American Bicyclists’ National Bike Month.

On May 8, thousands of schools across the United States—from all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico—will participate in Bike & Roll to School events. The initiative focuses on healthy lifestyles and safety. Schools and the surrounding neighborhoods participate in the campaign by raising awareness of traffic rules, increasing physical activity and raising awareness of drivers to share the road with cyclists.

Partners for the event include the Montgomery County Police Department, the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service and Montgomery County Public Schools.
