Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich is seeking applicants to fill six public and organizational vacancies on the Montgomery County Sports Advisory Committee

The committee, staffed by Montgomery County Recreation, studies sports participation and opportunities in the County, recognizes outstanding teams and athletes and makes recommendations to the County Executive and the Montgomery County Council. Members advocate for enhanced sports opportunities; help conduct research and address and identify discrepancies found in youth sports to raise the quality of life for residents.

“Sports help strengthen communities and participants get to learn important values including teamwork and sportsmanship while also experiencing the many benefits of increased physical fitness,” said County Executive Elrich. “This committee is an instrumental tool in advocating for enhanced sports opportunities for our youth and we are looking for leaders to help continue the committee’s success.”

The committee prepares and submits an annual report to the County Executive and the County Council regarding factors that affect sports participation in the County, including the availability of and access to athletic fields, facilities and sports. The committee also makes recommendations to improve the quality, quantity and variety of sports opportunities and facilities.

Additionally, the committee recognizes teams and athletes in the County who win state or national championships or represent the United States in international competition.

Members of the committee serve three-year terms. Public members serve without compensation but are eligible for reimbursement for travel and dependent care for in-person meetings attended. Committee meetings occur monthly.

Applicants of diverse backgrounds, professions, genders, geography, abilities, ethnicities and ages are encouraged to apply. Members of County boards, committees and commissions may not serve on more than one such group at a time. Members must complete training on the Maryland Open Meetings Act, Montgomery County Ethics Law and basic parliamentary procedure.

The deadline to apply is Friday, Sept. 20. For more information or to apply, click here. You can also learn more about this committee on the Montgomery County Recreation website
