Winter Storm Update

Montgomery County ended the snow emergency declaration at 7 a.m. today, Thursday, Jan. 29. The County had been following snow emergency procedures since 6 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 24, to allow residents to park for free at County garages during the duration of the snow emergency. Parking was also restricted along emergency routes and residential streets to assist with snow clearing.

Parking fees and enforcement will resume in County garages at 7 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 30.

Major snow-clearing operations continue, and crews will continue to check areas and treat roads overnight and into tomorrow. To report additional snow removal needs, residents can call 3-1-1 (if calling from inside the County), 240-777-0311, or create a service request online. This form is also available at the top of the County’s updated Winter Storm Information Portal.

The County experienced snow accumulations of up to 11.5 inches in some areas. While snowfall has stopped and plowing operations will wind down overnight, freezing temperatures are expected for at least the next few days. Residents are advised to exercise caution while traveling, as drifting snow, snowpack and ice patches may be present.

The Department of Housing and Community Affairs announced sidewalk snow-clearing enforcement is paused until Mon, Feb 2. Due to sustained freezing temps, snow-packed sidewalks have become icy and difficult to clear. Although enforcement is paused, property owners should help their neighbors by clearing sidewalks as soon as it is safe and possible to do so, prioritizing entrances, exits, and accessible routes. Take interim safety measures like applying traction aids where necessary.

As of 9 a.m. today, the Montgomery County Department of Transportation will have cleared over 5,300 lane miles of snow and ice, utilizing 550 pieces of equipment and nearly 600 active personnel over 70 continuous hours of service.
