Press Releases

For Immediate Release: Thursday, January 3, 2002

Beginning January 6, Montgomery County's Ride On bus system will offer new routes and improved service as part of an effort to increase ridership.

Improved service on many routes will add more frequent buses -- changing the wait between buses from 30 minutes to 20 minutes -- add new weekend service, extend bus operating hours, and adjust times on some routes to create more accurate schedules. Ride On will also eliminate trips on some routes, shifting resources to higher demand routes and times.

A new bus line, Route 96, will serve the Rock Spring Business Park, running from the Grosvenor Metrorail Station to Montgomery Mall. Montgomery Mall will now have additional midday and rush hour service.

Route 43 service from Shady Grove Station has been extended to the University of Maryland Shady Grove campus, and Saturday service has been added. Route 43 will no longer provide service to Broschart Drive.

Route 73 in Germantown will be extended to Goldenrod Lane and the Milestone Park and Ride Lot.

Ride On will discontinue the Route 21 Burtonsville midday shuttle service after

January 4 because comparable service will be provided by Metrobus Route Z8. For more information, see the WMATA website at www.wmata.com.

Route 2 morning trips into Walter Reed Medical Center will be by request only because of security concerns.

Ride On Routes 28, 68, and 69 were changed on December 10 to coincide with schedule changes on the MARC train Brunswick line. The changes are designed to provide better service to passengers who use the Maryland Department of Transportation's new MARC rail service extension from Frederick City and Monocacy to Washington's Union Station.

Significant schedule changes will also be made on the following Ride On routes: 1, 2, 5, 6, 9, 11, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 23, 26, 34, 35, 38, 43, 46, 48, 49, 54, 55, 56, 57, 58, 59, 61, 62, 63, 64, 70, 71, 73, 74, 78 and 90.

The Maryland Transit Administration provided funding for many of the current changes to Ride On service.
