Officer Involved Shooting

For Immediate Release: Thursday, March 8, 2012

The Metropolitan Police Department and the Montgomery County Police Department are investigating an officer-involved shooting of a suspect that occurred this morning along the adjoining boundaries of Montgomery County and the District of Columbia.

At approximately 12:39 a.m., the Montgomery County Emergency Call Center (ECC) received multiple calls for the sounds of shots near the 8100 block of Eastern Avenue.  Officers from the Montgomery County 3rd District responded.

The preliminary investigation revealed that when officers first arrived on the scene, they heard gunshots and soon encountered a lone, armed male subject on the north side of Eastern Avenue.  Shots were exchanged between the police and the suspect.  One officer was injured, transported to a local hospital, was treated and released.  The suspect was transported to MedStar Washington Hospital Center where he is in critical condition.

The number of shots fired and the circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation.

The male suspect’s identity will be released after it is confirmed and family members have been notified.

As is standard procedure, the involved officers have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of this investigation.  Their identities will be released at a later time.

This shooting occurred on the north side of Eastern Avenue which is just inside the District of Columbia.  As such, the Metropolitan Police Department is conducting the investigation of the event.  The Montgomery County Police, Internal Affairs Division is conducting the internal investigation related to the officers’ actions.
