Media Advisory: Media Conference to Showcase Equipment Purchased with Medical Emergency Professionals (MEP) Donation to Police

For Immediate Release: Wednesday, May 2, 2012

  • WHEN:       Tomorrow, May 3, 10:00 a.m.
  • WHERE:     Police Headquarters, 2350 Research Boulevard, Rockville, MD
  • WHAT:       Members of the Emergency Services Unit (ESU) will showcase and explain the purpose of medical equipment  purchased with donation from Medical Emergency Professionals (MEP)

The Montgomery County Police Emergency Services Unit (ESU) includes police officers trained as tactical medics.  These medics accompany tactical officers on high-risk operations such as raids, barricades, and hostage situations.  Police medics are able to provide immediate treatment of injured persons on scene of an incident, who otherwise would have had to wait until the situation is stabilized and safe enough for Fire and Rescue personnel to provide treatment. In the fall of 2011, a Montgomery County Police volunteer with ESU noted that the unit could benefit from additional equipment to enhance their capability to provide medical care.  The volunteer, who is a physician assistant, mentioned this to a physician who is a member of the Medical Emergency Professionals (MEP).  In December of 2011, the physicians of MEP collectively donated $7,000 to the Montgomery County Police Foundation, with the intention of the funds going to support the tactical medics.  ESU has used this donation to purchase equipment to be used in the field, such as nerve agent antidotes and materials to be used to transport injured patients from a dangerous scene to fire/rescue personnel.  The unit has also used part of this donation to purchase training equipment.  Before this purchasing of training equipment, the unit borrowed some of their training equipment from other public safety agencies.  This donation has greatly aided the tactical medics in their mission to provide medical aid to victims in high-risk situations.

At this press conference, Tactical Medic officers will demonstrate and explain the importance of equipment that was purchased with this donation. Representatives of MEP will also be in attendance.  The ESU armored vehicle will be on-site.
