Fatal Collision Involving Bicyclist in Olney

Detectives from the Montgomery County Police Collision Reconstruction Unit (CRU) are investigating a fatal collision involving a bicyclist that occurred today in Olney.

Today at approximately 6:29 a.m., officers from the 4th District responded to a collision involving a bicyclist in the area of Olney Laytonsville Road (Route 108) and Zion Road in Olney.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a gray, 2011, Toyota Camry was traveling eastbound on Olney Laytonsville Road (Route 108) in the area of Zion Road. For reasons still under investigation, the Toyota struck a bicyclist, who was also traveling on eastbound Olney Laytonsville Road (Route 108) with the flow of traffic. The bicyclist was pronounced deceased on scene.

The bicyclist is being identified as Diane M. Whitman, age 48, of the 9800 block of Sailfish Terrace in Montgomery Village.

The driver of the Toyota has been identified as Heather Simmons, age 30, of the 25500 block of Coltrane Drive in Damascus. Simmons was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The circumstances surrounding this collision remain under investigation. Investigators are asking anyone who witnessed this fatal collision to contact the Collision Reconstruction Unit at 301-840-2435. Callers may remain anonymous.
