Today, the Montgomery County Police Department, along with Gaithersburg police officers and Rockville City police officers, kicked off the
2012 Click It or Ticket seat belt campaign with
Operation Thin Blue Line. Thity-five officers conducted enforcement of seat belt and child safety seat laws on Route 355 (Frederick Road) from the D.C. line to the Frederick County line. This two hour enforcement detail was funded by the Maryland Highway Safety Office.
During today's enforcement, officers issued:
- 197 citations for seatbelt violations
- 3 citations for other traffic violations
- 4 warnings for other traffic citations
As a reminder,
ALL persons under 16 years old must be restrained by a seatbelt or child safety seat. Child safety seats are required for children who are
under 8 years old, weigh less than
65 pounds, and/or are under
4'8" in height. For those over 16 years old, the operator and front seat passenger must be seatbelted.
Violations of seatbelt or child safety seat laws will result in the following penalties:
- 22-412.2(d) Failing to secure a child under 8 in a child safety seat when transporting in a motor vehicle - $60
- 22-412.3(b) (Operator, Occupant under 16) not restrained by (seat belt, child safety seat) - $25.00
- 22.412.3(c) Front passenger 16 or older not restrained by seatbelt - $25.00
