Police Warn of Pigeon Drop Schemes

For Immediate Release: Monday, May 14, 2012

As warmer weather approaches and outdoor activities increase, the Montgomery County Police Department is warning citizens to be aware of Pigeon Drop schemes.

On Friday (May 11), at approximately 2:00 p.m., the police department was alerted to a Pigeon Drop scheme incident.  A 44-year-old female was approached by two black males in the area of the CVS located at 12209 Veirs Mill Road around 11:00 a.m.  The men showed the victim a large sum of money and told her that they would give the money to her if she gave them money from her bank account.

The suspects convinced the victim to drive to several ATM's and withdraw money from her bank account.  One of the suspects claimed that he worked for Bank of America; the second suspect claimed that he was a pastor.  The victim returned with the two men to the CVS parking lot.  The victim gave the money that she had obtained from her bank account to the men, and the two men went to a nearby Bank of America claiming that they would bring the money that they had offered to give her back to her.  Both suspects then disappeared with the victim's money and original money that was offered to the victim.

Based on this incident and others that have been reported to the police department since last fall, residents are urged to remain alert and vigilant and remember, if it sounds "too good to be true", it probably is.

Police realize that many victims may be hesitant to report such a theft as they may feel embarrassed that they have been tricked.  Police urge victims to report these thefts as it is the only way that police will know that these incidents are occurring in the community.  Not reporting such thefts perpetuates the scheme as the suspects target more victims in the community.
