Jaywalking Leads to Foot Chase and Handgun Arrest in Aspen Hill

For Immediate Release: Thursday, May 24, 2012

Yesterday, at approximately 3:50 p.m., 4th District officers observed 3 males and 1 female jaywalking on Bel Pre Road in Aspen Hill.  When an officer stopped the four subjects to speak with them about crossing the street outside of a crosswalk, one of the subjects, later identified as Foday Abdulai Gassama, age 21, of the 4100 block of Garrett Park Road in Silver Spring, immediately began running away from the officer.  Gassama was carrying a red and black backpack when he began running.  The officer chased Gassama across Georgia Avenue and into the surrounding neighborhoods before Gassama was apprehended by another officer at the intersection of Chesterfield Road and Bel Pre Road.

When Gassama was apprehended, he was no longer carrying the backpack.  Officers re-traced the route in which Gassama had run and located the red and black backpack in a trash can in the driveway of a residence in the 4000 block of Manor Park Court.  Inside the backpack was a loaded Jennings 9mm handgun and a magazine with additional ammunition.  Two children were playing nearby the location in which the backpack containing the handgun was discarded.

Based on the above, Gassama was arrested and charged with several firearms-related charges and failing to comply with the lawful order of a police officer.  Gassama is currently being held on a $5000 bond.
