MCPD to Hold 5th Annual Police Adventure Camp

For Immediate Release: Wednesday, June 13, 2012

The Montgomery County Police Department will hold its 5th Annual Police Adventure Camp from June 18th through June 22nd, 2012 at Veirs Mill Local Park in Wheaton.  The camp is a partnership between the Montgomery County Police Department, Montgomery County Public Schools, and Linkages to Learning.  The camp focuses on teaching incoming 4th, 5th, and 6th graders about topics such as team work, conflict resolution, good decision making, resistance to drugs and alcohol, and peer pressure skills and strategies.  Campers also participate in arts and crafts, sports, games, and special SWAT and Fire/Rescue demonstrations.

New this year, and the highlight of this year’s camp, will be a field trip to the National Museum of Crime and Punishment.  The police department would like to thank the museum for generously donating free admission to the thirty children that will be attending the camp and to the Police Adventure Camp counselors.

The 1st Annual Police Adventure Camp took place at Veirs Mill Elementary School in June 2008.  Viers Mill Elementary School was identified as a potential grooming ground for recruitment of new gang members.  Over time, an officer had discovered that there was a high level of gang influence in the community and recognized that this area was in need of some positive involvement with the police department.

Since then, the Police Adventure Camp has become an award-winning program.  Administrators at Veirs Mill Elementary School have reported that past campers show an increase in motivation, a decrease in absenteeism, and improved scholastic performance.  Police Adventure Camp teaches young students that they can have a positive impact on their community and that their decisions matter – even in elementary school.

Officers and non-sworn staff work tirelessly throughout the Police Adventure Camp in hopes of making a difference in the life of each and every child who attends the camp.  The police department is confident that each student will take with them experiences and knowledge that will help them to make wise decisions in pursuing their dreams and memories that will last a lifetime.

The Police Adventure Camp is truly a community effort as donations are crucial to providing food, equipment, and supplies to the campers.  As a result of Department personnel reaching out to known contacts and/or area businesses, Chick-Fil-A, Chipotle, Burger King, and Giuseppi’s are generously donating lunch to this year’s campers.
