Female Pedestrian Struck in Leisure World

The Montgomery County Police Collision Reconstruction Unit (CRU) is investigating a serous pedestrian collision that occurred at approximately 6:46 p.m. on Monday, June 25, at the intersection of N. Leisure World Boulevard and Interlachen Drive in the Leisure World community.



The investigation revealed that Mary Lou Smith , age 83, of the 15300 block of Beaverbrook Court in Silver Spring, was crossing N. Leisure World Boulevard within the crosswalk at Prince Frederick Way in a southbound direction.  Diana Rubens Melnick, age 78, of the 3200 block of N. Leisure World Boulevard in Silver Spring, was driving a 2003 Chrysler westbound on N. Leisure World Boulevard approaching Prince Frederick Way.  For reasons still under investigation, she did not see Ms. Smith crossing the roadway.  After her vehicle struck the victim, she remained at the scene of the collision.

 Ms. Smith was transported to Suburban Hospital for treatment of potentially life-threatening injuries.
