MCPD Storm Update

For Immediate Release: Saturday, June 30, 2012

Montgomery County Police advise that there are currently 35 road closures with more expected to be identified as information is received.

PEPCO reports that there are now 221,000 homes in the County without power.

Five hundred out of 800 traffic signals remain out of service.  Police will assist with traffic direction at major intersections when possible as they continue to respond to heavier than normal calls for service.  Drivers are asked to treat "dark" intersections as four-way stops.  Stop - then proceed cautiously.  This practice is critical to ensure driver and pedestrian safety.

When a wire or tree is down in or blocking a roadway, call 9-1-1 or the police non-emergency number 301-279-8000.  All other calls for trees and wires down can be reported to MC311 by calling 240-777-0311 or 240-777-6000.  Information can also be reported to MC311 through their website at www.mc311.com.  Community members with trees down on County property are asked to be patient as there are a great number of locations for the County crews to respond to.

Three shelters are currently open in the County at:  Richard Montgomery High School, Clarksburg High School and at the new White Oak Recreation Center at 1700 April Lane in White Oak.

Because storms are expected again later today.  Residents are asked to complete errands and trips before more bad weather occurs.
