Police Investigate Fatal Collision on Connecticut Avenue

Detectives from the Montgomery County Police - Collision Reconstruction Unit (CRU) are investigating a fatal collision that occurred today on Connecticut Avenue in Chevy Chase.

Today, at approximately 11:42 a.m., officers from the 2nd District and Fire/Rescue personnel responded to Connecticut Avenue near W. Irving Street for a report of a personal injury collision.  Upon arriving, officers located a 2005 Subaru Outback station wagon that had struck a tree.

Investigation revealed that the Subaru was traveling on southbound Connecticut Avenue when, for unknown reasons, it went off the right side of the roadway and struck a tree.  The passenger in the vehicle was pronounced deceased on the scene of the collision.  The driver was transported to Suburban Hospital in critical condition.

The passenger in the vehicle is identified as Ann R. Smith, age 88, of the 3000 block of Military Road in Washington, DC.  The driver is identified as Robert Jay Groner, age 65, of the unit block of Wachs Court in Olney.

The circumstances surrounding this collision remain under investigation.  Investigators are asking anyone who witnessed this fatal collision to contact the Collision Reconstruction Unit at 301-840-2435.  Callers may remain anonymous.
