Investigators with the Collision Reconstruction Unit (CRU) are investigating a serious collision involving a bicyclist and vehicle that occurred this morning.

Today at approximately 6:54 a.m., police and Fire/Rescue responded to the intersection of Woodfield Road and Airpark Road for the report of a bicyclist struck by a vehicle. Preliminary investigation by CRU revealed that a 2004, silver Nissan Sentra was traveling southbound on Woodfield Road and was continuing on a green light through the intersection of Airpark Road.  The bicyclist was attempting to cross Woodfield Road from east to west on the south side of the Airpark intersection when she was struck by the vehicle.  The driver of the striking vehicle as well as numerous witnesses stopped at the scene and spoke with police.

Further investigation revealed that the bicyclist, who was wearing a helmet, was in the crosswalk but was crossing against the pedestrian signal.  The bicyclist was accompanied by a 16-year-old female friend also on a bicycle.  The friend was not injured.

The bicyclist was transported to a local hospital in serious condition and remains in the hospital with life-threatening-injuries.

The bicyclist has been identified as Nicole Marie Polen, age 15, of the 19900 block of Burchap Place in Montgomery Village.  Nicole will be a sophomore at Gaithersburg High School at the start of the new school year on Monday.

The driver has been identified as William Earle Maselas, age 30, of the 4200 block of Charley Forest Street in Olney.  Maselas did not have any injuries.

The circumstances surrounding this collision remain under investigation.  Investigators are asking anyone who witnessed this collision and have not already talked to investigators to contact the Collision Reconstruction Unit at 301-840-2435.  Callers may remain anonymous.
