Accidental Drowning in Derwood

For Immediate Release: Sunday, September 2, 2012



Today at approximately 3:15 p.m., police and fire/rescue responded to a residence in the 7000 block of Needwood Road in Derwood for the report of a drowning.

Preliminary investigation by the Major Crimes Division – Homicide/Sex Section indicated that the victim had been performing yard work in the backyard of his residence for several hours.  At one point a family member looked out a window and observed the 59-year-old male victim lifeless in the residence pool.  Despite life-saving efforts, the male was declared deceased at a local hospital.  The victim was wearing swim trunks and his sandals and a towel were located next to the pool.

The victim has been identified as Mojtaba Tehrani Kia, age 59, of the 7000 block of Needwood Road in Derwood.  At this time, there is no suspicion of foul play in this incident.  The Medical Examiner's Office will determine the cause of death.
