CORRECTED RELEASE FOLLOWS:

Detectives from the Montgomery County Police Department – Collision Reconstruction Unit (CRU) are investigating a collision that occurred on August 29 on Ridge Road (Route 27) at Kemptown Road in Damascus.  A passenger in one of the involved vehicles was declared deceased at Baltimore Shock Trauma on September 6.

On August 29 at approximately 2:29 p.m., officers from the 5th District responded to the intersection of Ridge Road (Route 27) and Kemptown Road (Route 80) for a report of a personal injury collision.

Preliminary investigation revealed that an off-duty Montgomery County Police Officer was driving northbound on Ridge Road in an unmarked 2003 Crown Victoria police vehicle and observed a 2002 Pontiac Grand Am approaching from the rear at what appeared to be a high rate of speed.  The Grand Am then attempted to pass the 2003 Crown Victoria in the southbound lane.  As the Grand Am attempted to make the pass, it struck the fender of the Crown Victoria and proceeded across the southbound lane of traffic.  The Grand Am then continued off the roadway, struck a fence of a residence in the 28000 block of Ridge Road, and stopped after striking a commercial building adjacent to the residence.  The vehicle came to rest on its roof.

The driver and passenger of the Grand Am were transported to Baltimore Shock Trauma with what appeared to be non-life-threatening injuries. On September 6 at approximately 10:00 p.m., the passenger of the Grand Am was declared deceased at the hospital.  The deceased passenger is identified as James Wilson, age 53, of the 400 block of Beck Drive in Mount Airy.   The driver, who survived, is identified as Billie Jo Wilson, age 36, of the same address in Mount Airy.  The off-duty officer was not injured.

The circumstances surrounding this collision remain under investigation.  Investigators are asking anyone who witnessed this fatal collision and have not talked to police to contact the Collision Reconstruction Unit at 301-840-2435.  Callers may remain anonymous.
