Police Seek Public's Help in Assault Investigation

Detectives from the Montgomery County Police 3rd District Investigative Section are investigating a first-degree assault that occurred between the hours of 8:00 p.m. on October 1 and 3:30 a.m. on October 2 in Silver Spring.  The victim is in the hospital with critical injuries and due to his injuries has been unable to speak with detectives.  Detectives are hoping that someone has information about the incident and investigators will be distributing flyers (click for English flyer) (click for Spanish flyer) in the community at 4:00 p.m. today.

At approximately 3:31 a.m. on October 2, a 9-1-1 call was received from two brothers.  They stated that they had located their father who was lying unresponsive in the parking lot of an apartment building in the 8600 block of Garland Avenue in Silver Spring.   Third District officers and Fire&Rescue personnel responded to the scene.  The male victim was transported by ambulance to a local hospital with critical injuries.

The victim is being identified as Candelario Guevara-Guzman, age 72, of Silver Spring.  Investigation by detectives has indicated that Guevara-Guzman left his residence at approximately 8:00 p.m. on October 1 to go shopping.  At approximately 3:30 a.m. on October 2, Guevara-Guzman's sons, who live with Guevara-Guzman and were walking back home from a convenience store, located their father on the ground in the 8600 block of Garland Avenue.  The location where Guevara-Guzman was found is an approximate two-minute walk from his residence.  Guevara-Guzman was physically beaten, although it is unknown if a weapon was used in the assault.

Guevara-Guzman remains in the hospital and is unable to speak.  Detectives from the 3rd District are asking anyone who has information about this incident to please call the 3rd District Investigative Section at 301-565-5835.  Those who wish to remain anonymous may call Crime Solvers of Montgomery County toll-free at 1-866-411-TIPS (8477) or enter a tip online.
