Officer Involved Shooting in Silver Spring

For Immediate Release: Monday, October 8, 2012

At approximately 3:15 a.m. this morning, 9-1-1 received a call from a 22-year-old male stating that he wanted to die and had a gun.  During the conversation with the 9-1-1 call taker, the male said he wanted to kill himself but also stated that he wanted police to kill him.  Using cellular phone records and by reaching out to family members, 9-1-1- personnel were able to determine the caller's name and current location.

At approximately 3:17 a.m., patrol officers located the male caller in the outside basement stairwell of a home in the 9500 block of Woodland Drive in Silver Spring.  Officers initiated a conversation with the male and throughout the conversation asked him to put down his firearm and to peacefully come up from the stairwell.  The man's girlfriend, age 23, was babysitting three children inside of the home (which is the clients' home) at the time of the incident.  Officers were able to safely usher the woman and the children out the front door of the home.

As police continued to talk with the male in the backyard, other officers entered the home and were able to see the male in the stairwell and see that he had a firearm.  At approximately 5:03 a.m., the man began to walk up from the stairwell with the firearm.  There was an encounter and the man was shot.  The man was transported by ambulance to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.  The male was declared deceased at the hospital.

Investigators have determined that the firearm in the male's possession was a replica handgun.

Per protocol, the Montgomery County Police-Major Crimes Division and Internal Affairs Division will conduct their investigations regarding this incident.  The officers involved in the shooting incident have been placed on paid, administrative leave, which is also standard protocol.
