Collision Reconstruction Unit Investigates Serious Collision in Germantown

Detectives from the Montgomery County Police – Collision Reconstruction Unit (CRU) are investigating a serious collision that occurred this afternoon inGermantown.

At approximately 2:30 p.m., officers from the 5th District as well as Fire/Rescue responded to the intersection ofDarnestown Road (Route 28) andBerryville Road for a report of a personal injury collision involving a bicyclist and a Montgomery County School bus. Preliminary investigation revealed that the bicyclist was traveling northbound onBerryville Road.  The school bus was traveling eastbound onDarnestown Road.  For reasons still under investigation, the bicyclist and school bus collided in the intersection.

The bicyclist, an adult male, was taken to an area hospital in critical condition. The name of the bicyclist will be released once family notifications have been made. The school bus driver, Michael Rinaldo, age 53, of the 18500 block of Bay Leaf Way in Germantown, was transported to an area hospital for a check-up. The school bus was carrying 29 students fromPoolsvilleHigh School. None of the students were injured.

The circumstances surrounding the collision remain under investigation.  Investigators are asking anyone who witnessed this collision and have not spoken to detectives to please contact the Collision Reconstruction Unit at 240-773-6620.  Callers may remain anonymous.
