In July of 2012, Montgomery County Police Family Crimes Detectives received information about past possible sexual abuse by Richard Jay Curl, age 63, now living in the 2200 block of Aryness Drive in Vienna, Virginia.

On August 15, 2012, a Family Crimes Detective interviewed (the now) 43-year-old female victim regarding previous sexual abuse involving Richard Curl that occurred in Montgomery County.  Curl was the victim's swim coach from the time she was nine years old until she was approximately 18 years old.

Investigation by Family Crimes Detectives has revealed that the sexual abuse began with acts of inappropriate touching when the victim was 13.  From age 15 through age 18, the sexual abuse progressed to an inappropriate sexual relationship.  These acts occurred in various locations in Montgomery County, to include Curl's former residences in Rockville and Darnestown and the swimming facilities at the Georgetown Preparatory School located at 10900 Rockville Pike in North Bethesda.

On October 23, 2012, an arrest warrant was issued for Richard Curl, charging him with one count of child abuse pertaining to the defendant having supervision of the victim in his role as her swimming coach.  Arrangements were made by Curl's counsel to turn himself in to detectives on October 25.  On October 25 at approximately 8:30 a.m., Curl turned himself in to detectives and he is currently being processed at the Central Processing Unit.

A photograph of Richard Curl is not available at this time.
