Arrests Made in Gang-Involved Assault

Detectives from the 4th District Investigative Section have been investigating a series of assaults and robberies that have occurred over the past several months in Wheaton and the Good Hope areas of the county.  The investigation involves members or associates of an area street gang known as “Little R” or “La Raza”.

On November 4, Montgomery County Police responded to the 1400 block of Silo Way where the victim, a 22-year-old male from Rockville, was attending a party. The victim and a group of individuals the victim did not know became involved in a dispute over the victim’s beer.  The altercation turned physical and the victim was assaulted by the group of individuals who struck the victim repeatedly with broken glass bottles about the head and face.  The victim sustained serious injuries during the assault and was taken to an area hospital for treatment.

On November 8, detectives arrested and charged Andres Jose Cortez, age 20, of the 3300 block of Hewitt Avenue in Silver Spring with attempted 2nd Degree Murder and 1st Degree Assault; Kevin Reynold Valdez, age 19, of the 14000 block of Cove Lane in Rockville, was arrested and charged with 1st Degree Assault and Conspiracy. And on November 14, Cristian Javier Ayala, age 17, of the 2600 block of Terrapin Road in Silver Spring, was arrested and charged as an adult with 1st and 2nd Degree Assault.  All are currently being held on bond and awaiting court dates.
