Fatal Single Vehicle Collision in Gaithersburg Investigated

Detectives from the Collision Reconstruction Unit are investigating a fatal collision that occurred early this morning in Gaithersburg.

At approximately 1:02 a.m., an off-duty police employee called 9-1-1 to report a gray pick-up truck being driven erratically.  Police started to respond to the area and a lookout was placed for the vehicle.  One officer arrived to the area of Route 108 and Hawkins Creamery Road but before he could get the driver to stop, the vehicle left the eastbound lane of Route 108 and struck a tree.  The driver succumbed to his injuries on the scene.

The driver has been identified as Jose Antonio Ayala, 49 years old, of Fullview Court in Gaithersburg.  Family members stated that Mr. Ayala was a diabetic and insulin dependent.  He was last seen by family at approximately 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 23, when he left the house for groceries.
