Police Investigate Fatal Pedestrian Collision in Wheaton

Detectives from the Montgomery County Police - Collision Reconstruction Unit (CRU) are continuing to investigate a fatal pedestrian collision that occurred this evening in Wheaton.

Today at approximately 4:37 p.m., 4th District officers responded to the intersection of  Veirs Mill Road and Ferrara Avenue for the report of a pedestrian struck.  Preliminary investigation has revealed that a 1996 Ford Explorer was traveling eastbound on Veirs Mill Road.  At the intersection of Ferrara Avenue, the driver of the Explorer made a U-Turn onto westbound Veirs Mill Road.  As the vehicle was making the U-Turn,  investigators believe the vehicle may have struck the westbound, right-hand curb of Veirs Mill Road.  The Explorer then crossed the three westbound lanes of Veirs Mill Road, went over the center median of the road, and then crossed three lanes of eastbound Veirs Mill Road.  The vehicle continued to travel over the eastbound, right-hand curb of the road and then traveled through a bus shelter.  The vehicle struck a pedestrian who was sitting on a bench in the bus stop shelter.

The pedestrian was transported to a local hospital where she succumbed to her injuries.  The pedestrian is being identified as Maria Lusminia Colindres, age 77, of the 3700 block of Delano Street in Silver Spring.

The driver is being identified as Cheryl Denise Green, age 56 , of the 1600 block of Yale Place in Rockville.
